Marcus du Sautoy is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford. He is passionate about maths and he’s demonstrated this by making his local football team all wear shirts with prime numbers on. They’ve since had great success on the football pitch!

About the Ri Christmas Lectures

In the mid 1820s Michael Faraday, a former Director of the Royal Institution, initiated the first Christmas Lecture series at a time when organised education for young people was scarce. He presented a total of 19 series, establishing an exciting new venture of teaching science to young people.

The Christmas Lectures have continued annually since this time, stopping only during World War 2. They are recognised as an educational forum for presenting complex scientific issues to young people in an informative and entertaining manner and are the flagship of the Royal Institution. Many world-famous scientists have given the lectures including Baroness Susan Greenfield, the current Director of the Royal Institution, David Attenborough and George Porter. The Ri and the IET

Due to the major refurbishment project the Ri is currently undergoing, the Christmas Lectures will take place off-site for the second time since they began. The lecture theatre was completely out of action for the December 1929–January 1930 Christmas Lectures during a massive reconstruction project in 1929–1931, so the lectures had to find a temporary home. The Institute of Electrical Engineers offered their premises for free, and so Stephen Ranulph Kingdom Glanville was able to enthral young audiences with lectures on ‘How things were done in ancient Egypt’. We are delighted to announce the Christmas Lectures will be returning to the IEE (now called the Institute of Engineering and Technology) in 2006. The IET is located at Savoy Place, London WC2R 0BL.

For the third consecutive year, the Christmas Lectures are generously supported by the Leverhulme Trust. The Leverhulme Trust was established in 1925 under the Will of the First Viscount Leverhulme with the instruction that it should support scholarships for education and research. Since that time, the Trust has provided funding for research projects and studentships across all the academic disciplines, the ambition being to support talented individuals as they realise their personal vision in education or research. This is the second year that the Christmas Lectures will be broadcast on five over the Christmas period. The universe continued in the television series Stargate SG-1, which premiered in 1997 and is still on air today nine seasons later. It is the longest sci-fi series still in production, and has survived network and cast changes. The ring turns out to be a Stargate, a device that allows for instant teleportation by creating a wormhole to a complementary device on another planet. Jackson steps through the Stargate with a military team led by Colonel Jack O'Neill to a desert planet called Abydos. There, they fight to free the enslaved human population from an alien called Ra. After he's defeated, O'Neill returns to Earth, but Jackson chooses to stay. Believing the Abydos gate is destroyed, the military closes the Stargate, but not for long...

One year later, a group of aliens step through the unused Stargate and attack the soldiers guarding it. Colonel O'Neill is forced to admit he disobeyed orders and didn't destroy the Abydos Stargate. He returns with a new team, and Dr. Jackson explains to him that there is a whole network of Stargates scattered throughout this galaxy. After Abydos is attacked, the team discovers that Ra wasn't the last of his race after all, and they find a new enemy, Apophis. They return to Earth, with new allies and a new battle to fight.

THE REPLICATORS.The replicators originate in another galaxy,SG1 are given a rude introduction to this hostile life form due to Thor,the Chief General of the Asgard Fleet.

The Asgard are very advanced when "energy weapons" are appropriate but the Replicators are as advanced,or more advanced than the Asgard.The Tauri (us humans on Earth) are primative compared to the Asgard but offer a primative weapons i.e percussion devices such as guns and explosives that can shatter apart the Replicators,although they can re-assemble.

THE ORI.The ORI are a renegade and evil form of the Ancients.They are determined to

undergo the process of ascension.This is a state of pure energy,power and wisdom.They enlist an army of PRIORS that convert groups of villagers to believe in the supreme power and benevolence of the ORI.There methods are the same as the Catholic Inquisition.They burn people alive for disobediance.This was a cruel and insidious system on Earth that lasted for 600 years.

For the next month, five of the nine planets that make up our solar system will be visible to the naked eye. Here's our guide to the best sites on our celestial neighbours

1. You can catch a rare glimpse of the five planets closest to us for four weeks from tonight in an alignment that will not be seen again until 2040.

2. And you don't need a telescope or any specialist equipment - look west just after sunset and try to pick out Orion (an interactive sky map will help). Follow the three stars of its belt up and to the right to find Saturn, which is easily visible at the moment.

3. Below it in the great celestial bunch up comes Mars. The red planet is quite small at the moment, but it comes much closer to earth next August when its detail will be visible through a telescope.

4. Next is Venus, the evening star, which can currently be seen after dusk just to the left of where the sun has set. Often called Earth's sister planet but the two are not especially similar - surface temperatures are hot enough to melt lead, a Venusian day lasts 243 Earth days (even longer than a 225-day Venusian year) and the sun rises in the west.

5. Mercury - the smallest planet and the closest to the sun - hovers between Venus and the horizon. We know little about it - fortunately a Nasa spacecraft will take off to explore it in March 2004.

6. The last of the planets visible to the naked eye is Jupiter. In tonight's alignment you can find it two thirds of the way between Saturn and the Moon. Its collision with the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 was the first observed collision between two solar system bodies.

7. Further up you get Uranus ... (You have to be careful how you pronounce that.)

8. Also in the outer reaches is Neptune. The second planet to be discovered in modern times, a Cambridge mathematician, John Couch Adams, predicted its existence to account for the fact that Uranus was being pulled slightly out of position in its orbit

9. And last of all is Pluto, which is smaller than the Moon. It is named after the Roman god of the underworld and its satellite is named after Charon who ferried the dead to his domain. Until 1930 no one knew it was there.

10. There is, however, one planet you can always see. It's Earth, which is the most remarkable of the nine.
